Brandy Tiernan

Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC)

Director, Human Research Protection Program

I'm a cognitive neuroscientist who used EEG/ERP to examine the complex relationship between executive function and emotion/affective processing. Now, I'm a recovering academic and I've moved to a position in the nonprofit world as a consultant on ethical and sound research design for community based organizations in western North Carolina. In this position I am also the director of the human research protection program where I work with residents and faculty from internal medicine, family medicine, ob/gyn, psychiatry, general surgery, and dentistry on research, coaching them through ethic design and methods, and maintaining compliance. When I'm not at MAHEC I'm with my partner (married 2010) and FOUR kids: a 5th grader, 3rd grader, and twins (born in 12/2021). Loving all of the hard and complicated and joyful and uncertain and exciting phases of life.
